The world of anime and manga slowed down a bit on March 1, 2024, when Dragon Ball’s legendary creator Akira Toriyama passed away at the age of 68. For many fans, myself included, Dragon Ball wasn’t just a show, it was a gateway to an amazing universe filled with unforgettable characters, exciting battles, and humorous doses energetic with Toriyama, with his awesome ideas and storytelling skills, being the mastermind behind it all. Many of us grew up next to Goku, the spear haired Saiyan who had the habit of never giving up, as he trained, fought and collected those Darn Dragon Balls.

Toriyama’s art style was immediately recognizable, with dynamic action sequences and characters. Though his stories were often based on martial arts, they wove themes of friendship, perseverance and the importance of having a good laugh, even in the face of adversity Toriyama’s influence on the world of anime is undeniable. Dragon Ball became a worldwide hit, generating numerous seasons, films, video games, and merchandising. It influenced a generation of artists and storytellers, including myself. Beyond the recognition and commercial success, what was most important was Toriyama’s bond with his fans. He constructed a virtual universe in which we could root for the heroes, gasp at the villains, and lose ourselves in the adventure. Toriyama’s passing left a gap, yet his legacy lives on in the hearts of millions. Every time we get ready for a workout, summon our inner courage, or simply laugh with friends, a piece of Toriyama’s wisdom lives on.

Yes and No because yes Toriyama is dead and we wont get anything as iconic as the characters he created but we will get to see new type of characters and story line from his son.
